Welcome to 8th Grade American History
Welcome to Coach Wilson’s 8th grade American History class.

Tutoring Information
American History tutoring will take place in room 1207 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 7:45 – 8:10.
Course Description
8th Grade American History covers the history of the United States from colonization in the 17th Century to Reconstruction after the Civil War.
We will cover the following topics:
1st Nine Weeks 3rd Nine Weeks
Exploration and Colonization Age of Jackson
Causes of the Revolutionary War Westward Expansion (Manifest Destiny)
The Revolutionary War Industrialization and Reform
Sectionalism
Causes of the Civil War
2nd Nine Weeks 4th Nine Weeks
Constitutional Era The Civil War
Early Republic Reconstruction
STAAR Test Review
Students will complete 4 document-based questions Packets (DBQ’s) in which they interpret documents, draw conclusions, and support those conclusions in a 5 paragraph essay.
Grading Guidelines
Classwork/Homework – counts as one grade
Quizzes/DBQ Essays/Small Group work – counts as two grades
Tests/Major Projects – counts as three grades
Late work is defined as any assignment that is not submitted on the due date and class period with the exception of make-up work for absences or approved school activities. A 20% deduction from the total grade earned will be taken for late assignments. Late assignments will be accepted until the material has been tested or within a three-week grading period.
How to improve a failing grade
Turn in ALL missing assignments
Attend tutoring for additional help
Students will be given the opportunity to retest or correct a failing test assignment to raise that grade to a 70.
Required Materials
From the required supplies for middle school, students will need to bring the following supplies for history class:
Box of Colored pencils
Loose leaf paper
1-1 ½ inch binder
Students will be required to bring their materials to class every day.
Classroom Procedures
Students are required to follow posted classroom procedures at all times, as well as at Driscoll school rules.
When a student is absent
When a student returns from an absence, the daily agendas will be in the teacher’s agenda book in the classroom. Students are responsible for checking and copying the agenda book to find out what assignments they have missed. Daily agendas may also be found on the teacher’s website. If a student misses a test or quiz, they are responsible for making an appointment with the teacher before or after school to make up the exam.
